What are the vitamin supplementation after Bariatric surgery?

What happens after Bariatric Surgery?
Generally after bariatric surgery, the availability of vitamins to the body is greatly reduced due to the following reasons:
  • The restrictive procedure which involves reducing the size of the available stomach, caps the amount of food available to the body. As a result only limited vitamin is available in the limited food consumed. Hence vitamin deficiency occurs.

  • Malabsorbtion severely restricts the vitamin absorbing capacity of the body. Most vitamins, minerals and micronutrients are absorbed in the duodenum, jejunum and parts of the small intestine which is bypassed in Gastric bypass and Duodenal Switch procedures.
Thus it has to be kept in mind that an individual who undergoes any of the bariatric procedure has a reduced capacity to absorb vitamin.
Generally multivitamin supplementation is recommended after the bariatric surgery for lifetime. People who have undergone restrictive procedures like Lap Band or Gastric Sleeve are recommended 100% of normal recommended value of vitamins. Obese individual who have undergone malabsoprtion procedures like Gastric Bypass or Duodenal Switch are recommended 200% of normal recommended value of vitamins. Special emphasize is mainly for vitamin B12, Iron and Calcium.
So if you have undergone a bariatric procedure, never skip vitamin supplementations for life. Make it a mandate in your diet plan.

What are the Lifestyle changes to be made after Bariatric surgery?

Getting a Bariatric surgery done does not give us the passport to lead a carefree life. The success of the surgery depends on diet and physical fitness also. Here are some of the lifestyle changes a person who has undergone a Bariatric surgery should adopt.

Diet Planning:
High-calorie junk food should be eliminated from our diet. Small amounts of food should be taken at a lesser interval of time to prevent frequent craving of food. A high protein and Low Carb diet are recommended. Vitamin supplements should be taken regularly. Fluid intake is a very important factor for healthy bowel movements and proper hydration.

Physical Activities:
Engagement in regular physical activities is a must to keep the body active and to burn more calories. Moderate exercise such as walking is advised after the surgical procedure. Activities like Jogging, Cycling, and other activities can be done a few months after surgery upon the doctor's advice.

Getting Enough Rest:
Irregular sleep cycles and not getting enough sleep can affect your health in a negative way. A good nights sleep can reduce stress, anxiety, and also helps to cut the chain of the vicious cycle of getting into stress and obesity.

Cut smoking and Alcohol:
Smoking and Dring should be stopped at least 6 weeks prior to the surgery. Alcohol can prevent you from losing weight. Alcohol gives us empty calories. 1gm of alcohol gives us 7calories which is reminiscent of fat. After the surgery, consuming alcohol can erode the protective lining of the stomach which can lead to ulcer and gastritis.

Does Bariatric surgery affect Fertility?

"Does Bariatric Surgery affect fertility" is a common question among both sexes when they consider bariatric surgery for weight loss. But the irony is that morbid obesity itself can affect the fertility of individuals. Morbid obesity can cause a diminished interest in sex because sex hormones are not transported to their respective genital organs. This can cause problems like erectile dysfunction in males and erratic menstrual cycles in females. However, Bariatric surgery indirectly helps you prevent infertility by helping you lose weight.
