5:2 Intermittent Fasting. What is it?

Intermittent fasting is the latest trend that has popped up among people who want to lose weight, fitness enthusiasts and among people who want to keep themselves fit. Many who have tried intermittent fasting have claimed that they can reduce the risk of chronic diseases and can also help you lose weight. 5:2 is one such intermittent fasting type.

The 5:2 type of intermittent fasting is a practice where you eat 25% of your recommended calorie need (approximately 500-600 calories) for 2 days in a week while you eat normally for the remaining 5 days of the week. The fasting days are usually set as Monday-Thursday or as Tuesday-Friday so that you do not fast for 2 straight days. There is once again 2 variants inside this fasting method. Some people follow a high fat keto diet during their fasting days while some eat zero calories during their fasting days. Whatever may be the type, it needs to be understood that many research is still going around intermittent fasting and most of these are done on animals. Despite that, the claims are encouraging and the general advice is to take it slow while you are just beginning to practice intermittent fasting.

Why is caffiene or drinking coffee bad after gastric bypass surgery?

Gastric bypass is one of the bariatric surgeries or weight-loss surgeries available for morbidly obese people to lose weight. In this surgery, your stomach will be divided into a small and large stomach. Then the smaller stomach pouch will be attached to the small intestine. Through this new arrangement, the patient will feel full with small amounts of food.

There are dietary restrictions that your surgeon and the nutritionist will inform you after your gastric bypass surgery. Caffeine or caffeine-containing foods or beverages are one such restriction. First, caffeine has a diuretic effect, which means caffeine flushes out water from our body. This means caffeine can make you dehydrated easily. Second, most caffeine-containing beverages are also high in sugar content. This can be counterproductive to your weight loss goals after the surgery. Also, there is a possibility of gastritis getting developed due to the small size of the stomach because the caffeine irritates the stomach lining. That is why bariatric surgeons advise you to avoid coffee and other caffeine-containing products after gastric bypass surgery.
