Why is caffiene or drinking coffee bad after gastric bypass surgery?

Gastric bypass is one of the bariatric surgeries or weight-loss surgeries available for morbidly obese people to lose weight. In this surgery, your stomach will be divided into a small and large stomach. Then the smaller stomach pouch will be attached to the small intestine. Through this new arrangement, the patient will feel full with small amounts of food.

There are dietary restrictions that your surgeon and the nutritionist will inform you after your gastric bypass surgery. Caffeine or caffeine-containing foods or beverages are one such restriction. First, caffeine has a diuretic effect, which means caffeine flushes out water from our body. This means caffeine can make you dehydrated easily. Second, most caffeine-containing beverages are also high in sugar content. This can be counterproductive to your weight loss goals after the surgery. Also, there is a possibility of gastritis getting developed due to the small size of the stomach because the caffeine irritates the stomach lining. That is why bariatric surgeons advise you to avoid coffee and other caffeine-containing products after gastric bypass surgery.
