More about Gastrectomy

Gastrectomy is the removal of either a part of the stomach or full stomach. When part of the stomach is removed it is called Partial Gastrectomy. If the stomach is completely removed it is called Total Gastrectomy. Gastrectomies are performed if a patient has benign, non-cancerous tumors or cancerous growths (stomach cancer), perforation due to an ulcer, severe ulcer in the stomach even if it is not perforated.and is bleeding, an uncontrolled bleeding ulcer, polyps, etc. When the upper half of the stomach is removed it is called Proximal Gastrectomy. If similarly only the lower half of the stomach is removed, it is called Distal Gastrectomy.

It is worth mentioning that Sleeve Gastrectomy performed as a type of bariatric surgery to reduce the weight of a severely obese individual is also a type of Gastrectomy as it involves removing a part of the stomach. In Sleeve Gastrectomy, the stomach is reduced in a vertical fashion and stapled. Generally, when a Partial Gastrectomy is done, the body adjusts over a period of time. But when Total Gastrectomy is done, certain vitamins and minerals are not digested by the body like Iron, Calcium, etc and hence they need to take supplements for life. So the patient has to make drastic lifestyle changes to accommodate the changed reality. Most Gastrectomy surgeries are indeed life-saving surgery type.
