Average monthly weight loss after gastric sleeve

Bariatric surgery is the ideal solution for morbidly obese people who are unable to lose weight. Gastric sleeve is one such bariatric surgery where the surgeon removes a part of your stomach to make a smaller sized stomach. This means that with a smaller stomach, you will feel full faster than usual, thereby limiting your food consumption. This will eventually aid in weight loss

Weight loss is the ultimate goal for all bariatric surgeries. In most bariatric surgeries, including gastric sleeve, the ability of the patient to maintain a healthy diet and exercise habits greatly influences the amount and rate of weight loss. Patient Data analysis has shown that weight loss in patients who have had sleeve gastrectomy is between 55%-60% in a span of 3-5 years after the surgery.

What is a least invasive weight loss surgery?

Unlike olden days, modern-day medical technology has enabled us to limit the size of incisions and also greatly reduce the healing time, pain, and infection risk. This has been made possible by laparoscopic surgical techniques where the entire surgery is done by making a few small keyholes. Laparoscopic surgery that is why is also referred to as keyhole surgery. In medical terms, this type of surgical approach is known as minimally invasive surgery.

Today, all bariatric surgeries, including gastric bypass, gastric banding, sleeve gastrectomy, etc are done using laparoscopic methods. are done through laparoscopic methods. Through this surgical technique, the surgeon is able to access the inner abdomen region without making longer and larger incisions. So you can be assured that bariatric surgery is not only safer but also helps in fast post-surgical healing.

Difference between dietary and non-dietary fat

Dietary fats are the type of fats and oils that are found naturally in animal and plant foods. Non-dietary fats are edible fats and oils that are processed and are not a good option for a healthy diet. Not all fats are unhealthy causing obesity. In fact, fats are an essential part of a healthy diet. Fats provide essential fatty acids that keep our heart functioning healthy, provide fat-soluble vitamins and are an incredible source of energy. They are very important and essential wherever there is physical friction like beating of the heart, joint movements, inflation and deflation of lungs, etc or in other words wherever there are mechanical movement and friction. But not all fats are good fats too.

Dietary fats are unsaturated fats that are essential for your body’s health and reduce your risk for diseases. These types of fats are most commonly found in coconut oil, sesame oil, olive oil, fish oil, seafood, meat like chicken, pork, lean mutton, lean beef, etc. The non-dietary fats which are also known as trans-fat are mostly found in processed foods. This type of fats are found in hydrogenated oils; like dalda, vanaspati, which increase your risk of disease even if consumed in small quantities. It needs to be borne in mind that even good oils if reused again and again develop transfat in them and are hence not good for health. It is important that you do not eliminate fat completely from your diet to get maximum benefits. A healthy diet, after all, has to have a fair share of dietary fat too.

Body contouring after weight loss

Weight loss surgeries help a great deal in reducing weight. When they also help in reducing excess weight beyond 25% of the original body weight, people develop sagging skin due to this excess weight loss. This excess skin may not look desirable and some people want to get relief from this. In such a scenario, it is okay to get body contouring surgical procedures to bring back their lost skin tone.

Cosmetic procedures like a tummy tuck, lower body lift, breast lift, etc, can provide relief by removing the excess sagging and hanging skin. But before undergoing such a surgery make sure that you have lost your excess weight completely, you are now in your ideal/stable weight, you have been maintaining this ideal weight for a fairly long period of time, you regularly exercise and have good control over your food habits. This means your body weight has stabilized and more importantly you have changed your lifestyle positively.

Gastric Sleeve for obese teens

Teens are generally not recommended for any type of bariatric surgeries because of the popular notion that they can manage and reduce their weight by non-surgical methods and they might also not be mentally prepared. But certain teens cannot undergo weight loss by non-surgical methods. So how does a teen-aged individual qualify to undergo bariatric surgery?

The teens need to be a minimum of 14 years old and have to have a height of an adult with a minimum of 45 kg above the recommended weight for his or her height. The other mandatory factors are, the teen should also suffer from co-morbid conditions like diabetes, sleep apnea, heart-related problems, etc. The factor the surgeon determines is the readiness of the teen to undergo surgery and probably a sense of need from the teen to maintain proper health and diet after the weight loss surgery. So if all these factors are satisfied a teen can also undergo a weight loss surgery without any hassles. Support and readiness of the parents of the teens are also very important factors that will be considered.

Eating after a bariatric surgery

People who have undergone any type of bariatric surgery have to watch out what they eat while they are on the move. This is particularly true when it comes to young individuals who have undergone any type of weight-loss surgeries. The going becomes tough when they are amidst their friends and all of them are indulging in food.

It is imperative for people who have undergone weight loss surgery to surround themselves with friends who are sensitive to the new reality. While educating friends about their balanced and restricted food habits may be cumbersome, it is always advised that the individual after undergoing bariatric surgery has to be psychologically prepared to adapt to the changed reality. In this matter, it is also advised that they can undergo a psychological counseling session to cope well on food habits after weight loss surgery.

Can stress cause weight loss?

One of the many factors that are overlooked but still play a role in weight loss is stress. Several misconceptions have led people to believe that stress can cause weight loss. But in reality, it is the other way around. To understand how stress inhibits weight loss, it is important to understand how stress affects our body.

Stress can greatly affect a person’s sleep pattern which in turn affects their hormones. Studies have shown that people who lack sleep, have higher amounts of the hormone ghrelin and lower amounts of the hormone leptin. While ghrelin is responsible to stimulate appetite and increase fat storage, leptin is responsible for hunger and fat management. This is the reason why many people suffering from stress eat more.  Under stress, the body does not know when the stressful situation will end and so it preserves energy by burning lesser calories and also stimulating to eat more. When that food you eat more is junk food, it is like inviting trouble. So it is always advisable to acknowledge and find ways to ease your stress. There is a minuscule percentage of people who can lose weight due to factors like anxiety and stress. It primarily happens for people who are stressed.

What can sleep apnea cause?

Sleep apnea is a sleeping disorder which causes breathing to stop and start repeatedly in sleep. The incident happens as a number of spells during sleep. If you feel drowsy, tired and sleepy after waking up in the morning, you might have sleep apnea. Sleep apnea occurs most commonly in males, postmenopausal women, the obese, and people with large necks. Anyone can get sleep apnea. The two types of sleep apnea include Central and Obstructive sleep apnea.  Obstructive sleep apnea occurs mainly due to obesity. When the muscles that support the soft palate and the uvula, relax too much, the airway gets narrowed or closed and causes inadequate breathing. The impaired or interrupted breathing is detected by the brain and briefly rouses the patient to restore normal breathing. In obese people, fat deposition present in the upper airway can also obstruct breathing. Loud snoring, breathing spells, mouth breathing, gasping, dryness of mouth, sleep deprivation are some of the symptoms of sleep apnea. Obese people, when they lie down, their lungs get pushed up and congested which prevents the lungs to absorb the required volume of oxygen. When this happens, the body and the brain is deprived of oxygen and a build-up of Co2 starts. This causes sleep deprivations.  Sleep deprivation can cause drowsiness, irritable mood, inability to concentrate, impaired memory, reduced physical strength, reduced immunity, etc. Sleep deprivation also promotes people to sleep in a sitting position which can occur at work, or during study or even while driving a car.

Studies have shown than sleep apnea is associated with obesity and is one of the co-morbidity. This means that being obese can increase your risk of getting sleep apnea. If you are severely obese and you suffer from spells of sleep apnea related incidents, bariatric surgery can help. The weight loss in bariatric surgery can reduce the occurrence of sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is also associated with heart diseases and high blood pressure both of which can also be improved by bariatric surgery followed by a healthy lifestyle.

Sleep apnea can cause weight gain, diabetes, hypertension, heart problem, sudden death in sleep. None of the diseases mentioned will come to control while they have sleep apnea. Children can also get sleep apnea.

More about Gastrectomy

Gastrectomy is the removal of either a part of the stomach or full stomach. When part of the stomach is removed it is called Partial Gastrectomy. If the stomach is completely removed it is called Total Gastrectomy. Gastrectomies are performed if a patient has benign, non-cancerous tumors or cancerous growths (stomach cancer), perforation due to an ulcer, severe ulcer in the stomach even if it is not perforated.and is bleeding, an uncontrolled bleeding ulcer, polyps, etc. When the upper half of the stomach is removed it is called Proximal Gastrectomy. If similarly only the lower half of the stomach is removed, it is called Distal Gastrectomy.

It is worth mentioning that Sleeve Gastrectomy performed as a type of bariatric surgery to reduce the weight of a severely obese individual is also a type of Gastrectomy as it involves removing a part of the stomach. In Sleeve Gastrectomy, the stomach is reduced in a vertical fashion and stapled. Generally, when a Partial Gastrectomy is done, the body adjusts over a period of time. But when Total Gastrectomy is done, certain vitamins and minerals are not digested by the body like Iron, Calcium, etc and hence they need to take supplements for life. So the patient has to make drastic lifestyle changes to accommodate the changed reality. Most Gastrectomy surgeries are indeed life-saving surgery type.

The Connection between obesity and cancer

Obesity is referred to as a condition where a person has unhealthy amounts of fat accumulated in their body. A person is graded as obese based on the person’s BMI. BMI or Body Mass Index is calculated by dividing the mass by the square of height. A person with a BMI of more than 30 is termed as obese. But is there a risk of developing cancer if a person is obese?

Just being overweight or obese does not mean that you will definitely develop cancer. But an obese person is more likely to develop cancer than a normally weighing person. Obesity does not cause cancer per se. But its associated disorders can increase the risk of cancer growth. Obesity-related common cancers are cancers of the colon, uterus, ovary, breast, pancreas. Obese people always have a low level of chronic inflammation in the body. This leads to DNA damage to the cells leading to cancer. Increased insulin levels and insulin-like growth factor-1 aid in cancer development. Fat tissues produce excess estrogen level and this can lead to endometrial and breast cancer. In short, some of the comorbidities associated with obesity has the potential to cause cancer. That is why people with obesity are more prone to develop cancer albeit indirectly.

Does the stomach stretch after gastric sleeve?

Gastric sleeve is a bariatric surgery type or weight loss surgery. Gastric sleeve is a procedure that involves removing two third of the stomach and thereby reducing the effective size of the usable stomach. This new smaller stomach can only hold a small amount of food, causing early satiety and achieving weight loss as a result.

Eventually, over time the reduced stomach stretches and allows accommodation for more food. This allows you to eat more food and can eventually lead to cessation of weight loss and increasing weight gain. However, this can be avoided by sticking to the meal plan provided by your bariatric surgeon. To prevent stretching of the gastric pouch, always avoid eating large meals on a regular basis and avoid drinking water during your meal.

How does obesity contribute to heart diseases?

Obesity is a condition that is usually accompanied by co-morbid conditions. People with a BMI of over 30kg/m2 are considered to be obese. an increase in BMI in obese people increases their risk of Coronary Artery Diseases or CAD. Some of the co-morbidities of obesity include hypertension (increased BP), Dyslipidemia (Increased cholesterol levels), Diabetes Mellitus (increased blood glucose level), sleep apnea, gallbladder problems, and many more.

Obesity and Herat diseases:
Obesity causes an alteration in your cholesterol levels. Obesity usually causes a spike in the bad cholesterol aka Low-Density Lipoproteins (LDL) and Triglycerides level. Obesity also lowers the good cholesterol High-Density Lipoproteins (HDL) levels, which are essential to remove the bad cholesterol from our body and reduce the risk of heart disease.

Obesity can cause an increase in blood pressure. Blood pressure rises in obese people because they require more blood to supply oxygen and nutrients to our body. Hence our body will increase the blood pressure to push the blood around our body. Highly elevated blood pressures are one of the common causes of a heart attack.

Diabetes is also another common cause of heart diseases. Obese people have a higher chance of getting diabetes than non-obese people. Diabetes is one of the major contributing factors of a heart attack. Controlling diabetes can reduce the risk of getting a heart attack.

Prevention with Bariatric surgery:
Bariatric surgery or weight loss surgery is done on people who are morbidly obese and who are unable to lose weightThere are several types of Bariatric surgery like Gastric bypass (Roux-en -Y), Sleeve Gastrectomy, Metabolic surgery, etc.

Does Bariatric surgery cure thyroid problems?

Bariatric surgery is a comprises of surgeries that helps severely and very severely obese individuals to lose weight. Bariatric surgery comprises of different surgical procedures like gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, mini gastric bypass, etc. Many studies point to the fact that Bariatric surgery greatly reduces comorbid conditions. This is the medication generally prescribed for Hypothyroidism.
A study revealed that people who had undergone bariatric surgery have had either a reduced need for LT4 or have completely stopped using LT4 altogether. Does Bariatric surgery cure diabetes?

Bariatric surgery is a weight loss surgery that helps morbidly obese people to lose weight. Obesity can be linked to a host of other problems. One of the most important problems that accompany obesity is diabetes. But can bariatric surgery cure diabetes? Bariatric surgery cannot cure diabetes per se, but it can reduce the symptoms drastically. Studies have shown that gastric bypass surgery can drastically improve the symptoms of type 2 diabetes. Gastric bypass surgery involves reducing the size of the usable stomach and a bypass is created from the reduced stomach to the small intestine. After a gastric bypass, the small intestine starts to produce a molecule called GLUT-1 that aids in utilizing the excess glucose in the body.

Vitamin and mineral intake after bariatric surgery

Bariatric surgery is done to lose weight in obese and morbidly obese patients. After the bariatric surgery, (except gastrectomy or sleeve gastrectomy), your mineral and vitamin need of the body cannot be supplied by the food you eat. This is because the surgery not only cuts down on the amount of food you can consume but also in many cases cannot process vitamins and mineral from food because of the reduced small intestine.

Hence vitamin and mineral tablets are mandated for life if you have undergone bariatric surgery. So when you do not intake vitamin and mineral tablets, you are prone to nutritional deficiencies and its associated diseases. Hence do not skip any of the prescription drugs as prescribed by your bariatric surgeon.

What are the vitamin supplementation after Bariatric surgery?

What happens after Bariatric Surgery?
Generally after bariatric surgery, the availability of vitamins to the body is greatly reduced due to the following reasons:
  • The restrictive procedure which involves reducing the size of the available stomach, caps the amount of food available to the body. As a result only limited vitamin is available in the limited food consumed. Hence vitamin deficiency occurs.

  • Malabsorbtion severely restricts the vitamin absorbing capacity of the body. Most vitamins, minerals and micronutrients are absorbed in the duodenum, jejunum and parts of the small intestine which is bypassed in Gastric bypass and Duodenal Switch procedures.
Thus it has to be kept in mind that an individual who undergoes any of the bariatric procedure has a reduced capacity to absorb vitamin.
Generally multivitamin supplementation is recommended after the bariatric surgery for lifetime. People who have undergone restrictive procedures like Lap Band or Gastric Sleeve are recommended 100% of normal recommended value of vitamins. Obese individual who have undergone malabsoprtion procedures like Gastric Bypass or Duodenal Switch are recommended 200% of normal recommended value of vitamins. Special emphasize is mainly for vitamin B12, Iron and Calcium.
So if you have undergone a bariatric procedure, never skip vitamin supplementations for life. Make it a mandate in your diet plan.

What are the Lifestyle changes to be made after Bariatric surgery?

Getting a Bariatric surgery done does not give us the passport to lead a carefree life. The success of the surgery depends on diet and physical fitness also. Here are some of the lifestyle changes a person who has undergone a Bariatric surgery should adopt.

Diet Planning:
High-calorie junk food should be eliminated from our diet. Small amounts of food should be taken at a lesser interval of time to prevent frequent craving of food. A high protein and Low Carb diet are recommended. Vitamin supplements should be taken regularly. Fluid intake is a very important factor for healthy bowel movements and proper hydration.

Physical Activities:
Engagement in regular physical activities is a must to keep the body active and to burn more calories. Moderate exercise such as walking is advised after the surgical procedure. Activities like Jogging, Cycling, and other activities can be done a few months after surgery upon the doctor's advice.

Getting Enough Rest:
Irregular sleep cycles and not getting enough sleep can affect your health in a negative way. A good nights sleep can reduce stress, anxiety, and also helps to cut the chain of the vicious cycle of getting into stress and obesity.

Cut smoking and Alcohol:
Smoking and Dring should be stopped at least 6 weeks prior to the surgery. Alcohol can prevent you from losing weight. Alcohol gives us empty calories. 1gm of alcohol gives us 7calories which is reminiscent of fat. After the surgery, consuming alcohol can erode the protective lining of the stomach which can lead to ulcer and gastritis.
